Bluebirds are a great asset to your backyard. People love to have them flying around the house because of their beauty and sound. These birds sing well and add color and life to your garden. What better way to start the day than with a bluebird's song? They are commonly found in North America. Some species of blue birds such as eastern bluebirds and western bluebirds are also found in regions extending from Canada to Mexico while mountain bluebirds are found about 7000 ft. above in western North America.
Bluebirds require a specific environment to live in. They prefer open fields and surroundings where they can easily find the insects and other worms on which they feed on. This also brings in a sense of freedom of movement which is very important for these birds. Blue birds usually find themselves a home in any cavity or holes on trees, fence posts etc. They are silent species and like to keep quiet mostly.
But as the population increased and people began to occupy open lands and fields for construction purposes, the birds lost their home. The wooden fence posts were no longer to be seen and replaced by metal fence posts and fields were turned into yards and parking lots. They lost their natural habitat and also came their new foe, the Starling and the House Sparrow. These birds are much aggressive than the bluebirds and also dwell in natural cavities and holes pushing the bluebirds out of their home.
This is the main reason why these birds are now slowly being attracted to your homes by providing them simple bluebird feeders and food. Blue birds usually feed on insects and worms. So a clear container containing the mealworms is necessary to attract them. The container should be able to hold the worms as they are alive and active. Along with the mealworms some bugs can also be put inside the container. These food items can be bought in suet easily.
Only bluebird feeders specifically designed to contain worms and bugs can attract these birds as they do not feed on seeds like other birds. It is very economical to raise a supply of mealworms by yourself which can be then put in the container in the blue bird feeders. Live worms are easy to maintain and the birds also feed on dried mealworms. Bluebird feeders are easily available in all pet stores along with the food package. While attracting these birds with your bluebird feeder, make sure that you select the right worms which are not too big for the birds to consume.
