There are three main categories of tent type:

3 Season Tents
These are suitable for spring, summer and autumn camping. They are the most common type of tent and can cope with most weather conditions apart from anything extreme.

4 Season Tents
These winter tents are ideal for winter camping and have been manufactured with snow and cold temperatures in mind. If you intend to go camping in winter weather then you must have a proper 4 season tent to provide the necessary protection.

Family tents
These should be large enough for a family and usually come big enough for at least four people. Family tents can come with separate sleeping areas or a separate living space.

Features to Check
Vestibules - these are great for keeping gear in especailly if its been raining. Often tents come with two vestibules - opne at each end. I would always recommend getting one as it is best to keep equipment away from your sleeping area.

Ventilation is very important and you must check that the tent you are looking at has lots of vents as this will help with air circulation and prevent condensation. If there are individual sleeping areas then check each compartment has vents.

Decide what pole system you prefer. I like the carbon fibre self assembly rods although they are not as sturdy as aluminium ones. If you plan to go backpacking then ensure that your tent comes with the special lightweight aluminium poles to keep the weight down.

The tent material information should state that it has a 1200mm waterproof polyurethane coating. Also have a look at the seams and check that they are taped with a waterproofing material. The seams will take most of the strain when the tent is set up. The zips should also be protected by a rain flap as this prevents water leaking through to the inner tent. (If your tent does leak it could be that you have not set it up correctly and the tension is not quite right).

Popular Tents At Present
From looking at various tent reviews the most popular tents at the time of writing are the following:

Coleman Arinos 8 Person Tent - Ideal for family camping and people who want versatility with space. However this tent is no longer available online.

Big Agnes String Ridge - This is a really popular two man tent for winter camping.

MSR Hubba Hubba - This has recently won the backpackers first choice award.

House 4 Big Agnes - Generally the Big House series is popular but the 4 man tent is now one of the best selling.

Some tent manufacturers do provide a limited lifetime warranty so check these details.
