Westie are courageous, light hearted and enjoyable members in the terrier group. Even though these west highland terriers are fun loving and family oriented, they need some of their unique needs like grooming, nutrition, companion and training to be fulfilled. When it comes to westie training, I highly suggest to properly taking care some of these following tips for your companion.

1. The grooming process must be done at least once in each 6 or 8 weeks. If you are not the one to indulge in the grooming process, you can hire a professional designer for your dog. If not, your dog may look like some other dog like poodle or schnauzer.

2. Professional grooming is the best recommendation but you can also learn about the grooming process for your westie dog. You can try to groom your westie dog when he is young. You must be able to look how your westie dog look like once the groomer has done their work. You can then follow the line set by the professional in order to retain their look. You can also consult from the grooming manual or look forward advice from the professional on grooming your dog.

3. You have to brush your dog’s coat with soft bristle brush. This dog breed has wiry outer layer coat and soft under coat. Never bath you dog more than once in every 6 weeks as their outer coat tends to be dry.

4. The nails should be trim in couple of weeks. Hold their paw gently and softly with your hand and trim their nails. If there is a quick trim then, if is not safe to trim their nail as it can bleed. So it wise to have a help of some professional. But if in the case of bleeding, apply some pressure for some time as to stop bleeding.

5. The hair around the inside ears should be trimmed and wipe off regularly. The longer hairs around the tip of ear also must be trimmed.

6. The west highland terrier or westie must be taken to the veterinarian for the regular health check up, heartworm and shot updates.

7. The dog must be always fed with the quality food and you must consult with the veterinarian for special dietary supplements and proper dog nutrition. This nutrition depends on your feeding the westie healthy food.

8. As they are friendly and easy to train, the daily westie training must be start with the socializing at the early age. Allow as much interaction with the family as possible. They really love and want to be with the people.

9. Westie dog obedience training must be taught to your westie. Teaching some basic commands is easy for these dogs and can save their lives. You can teach them to come and to stay because you don’t have idea about when you want your dog to come or to stay.

10. West highland terriers are energetic dog and should be provided with regular training and exercise. They can develop destructive behaviors like barking, chewing and digging.

West highland terriers are social in nature and like to spend most of their time with human. But, it will not be a good idea to let them alone and separated from human touch. You have to treat your puppy as a family member with positive enforcement and love.
