Worldwide, nature is being dangerously impacted by man-made emissions, spillage and effluent, two of the most obvious effects being climate change and acid rain. If only we could manage to live without harming mankind's home, the beautiful green planet, Earth. For city-dwellers it must appear to be a tantalising mirage to think of drawing cool, clean air into their lungs, with no harmful poisons or toxins. We're already paying the price, though, for the contamination we keep producing; the environment and our physical well-being is being made vulnerable by the air's toxicity.
We humans are unable to avoid the fallout from the disastrous impact that pollution, such as oil and chemical spills, is having on our oceans and all its inhabitants. Many fishing jobs that were centered on the healthy bounty of the sea have been eliminated. Fishing has provided for the nutrition and the well-being of so many communities for so long, that it almost seems unthinkable that today we are observing its demise. A significant instance of how we are spoiling the ocean is with oil spills, a recent example of this is the Deepwater Horizon spill which left many people jobless and cost billions of dollars to deal with. The food chain as well as the whole of the ecosystem experienced heavy damage, as a direct consequence of the deaths of large numbers of not only fish but also birds. An unfortunate example of human beings prioritising its short-term demand for oil, a dead substance, over the well-being of the earth and its other inhabitants.
As the earth's known oil reserves creep toward exhaustion, billions are pumped into exploration for new fields, money which could be used to increase and develop green energy production. Existing green energy options, which do no damage to the environment, are capable of delivering a lot of our energy needs. Given that the sun shines, solar panels, by way of example, can heat water and output additional electricity as well. And something that's equally simple in concept, wind turbines, uses another free resource (wind) to produce energy. The good side of wind turbines is they work 24/7, as long as there is adequate wind. We should understand that the time to implement an aggressive green energy program is now, given the environmental damage caused by oil, and the limited supply thereof. It is not unthinkable that, possibly the devastation of pollution and global warming could not just be terminated, but possibly reversed.
It is us that are going to reap some benefits in the short term and our children and grandchildren will benefit in the long term. We don't desire our youngsters to grow up in a world that has erratic weather and horrendous conditions; we want them to grow up in a beautiful world where they can be proud of the planet and all it has to offer. Beginning to live green, and looking after the environment, will be the only way we can ensure this.
It is going to take time, money and much effort to try and limit the damage of our actions on the environment, but it will be worth it.
