RIO DE JANEIRO – Former professional Brazilian soccer player Joao Rodrigo Silva Santos (35) was murdered and decapitated on Tuesday.
Silva’s head was placed in a backpack and left behind at the stoop by the front door of his home in Rio De Janeiro. His wife made the gruesome discovery Wednesday morning.
Joao’s head was mutilated, missing the eyes and the tongue. Police are at a loss where the rest of Santos’ body is.
Geisa Silva (31), Joao’s wife, told police she’d been up all night waiting for her husband to come home. He never showed. When she got ready to go to work at 6:30 AM local time, she heard a noise by the front door. She opened the door and found the backpack.
Eyewitnesses say they say two man forcing Silva into a van just after midnight on Monday, when he was closing his healthy foods and diet products store that he’d opened two years ago after saying goodbye to a lucrative professional football career.
Reportedly, the two man are part of a drug gang that is active in the northern part of Rio De Janeiro, according to police. Police say, Silva was never involved with drugs and everything points in the direction that he was chosen to be the victim of a revenge act.
Silva’s wife works for the anti-drugs division at the police department. Last Friday she raided a drug house, killing seven individuals. Police believe the drug gang retaliated against Geisa Silva by brutally murdering her husband.
Joao Rodrigo Silva Santos played for the Brazilian Second Division teams Bangu, Madureira and Boavista. In 2003 he also played one year with the IF Osters in Sweden.
